Vols Drop Game Two of Series at No. 20 Georgia
April 28, 2018 | Baseball
ATHENS, Ga. – Tennessee jumped out to an early lead but was unable to contain the bats of Georgia in a 12-4 loss on Saturday afternoon at Foley Field in Athens, Ga.
The 20th ranked Bulldogs cranked out 14 hits on the afternoon and had four players record multi-hit games. Austin Biggar and Tucker Bradley led the attack, combining for five hits, two runs and four RBI while starting pitcher Emerson Hancock struck out eight batters in seven innings of work to get the win and improve to 5-3 on the year.
Freshman left fielder Evan Russell was one of the lone bright spots for UT, going 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI. Fellow freshman Donovan Benoit tossed two scoreless innings and struck out three out of the bullpen.
The Vols struck first in the game, using a pair of two-out hits to build a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Nico Mascia singled through the right side and Russell did the rest, blasting a two-run home run to left field to give UT an early lead.
Tennessee's lead was short-lived, however, as the Bulldogs sent all nine batters to the plate in a four-run second inning to take a 4-2 lead that they would never relinquish.
Georgia added to its lead with another big inning in the fourth, striking for four more runs to take an 8-2 lead. The inning was punctuated by a three-run homer off the bat of Keegan McGovern after Bradley and Cam Shepherd reached on back-to-back hits with two outs.
UGA took advantage of four walks by Vols' pitchers in the fifth to tack three more runs on to its lead. The Vols got two of those runs back in the sixth on an RBI groundout by Pete Derkay and a sacrifice fly by Andre Lipcius to cut the Georgia lead to 11-4. A leadoff solo home run by LJ Talley in the seventh capped off the scoring in the game.
Blake Cairnes pitched the final two innings to close the game for the Bulldogs as they improved to 12-8 in conference play.
