KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – A dominating all-around performance led Tennessee to an easy 15-1 victory over UT Martin on Wednesday afternoon at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
Sophomore lefty Will Heflin was fantastic in his first-career start, allowing just two hits and no runs in 5.1 innings of work to improve to 3-1 on the season. The Volunteers' bullpen was also lights out, allowing just one run and one hit in 3.2 innings.
Benito Santiago had another solid day at the plate with three hits while tying career highs with three runs and four RBI. Pete Derkay, Andre Lipcius and Cal Gobbell all had multi-RBI games as well to help the Big Orange reach double-digit runs for the fifth time this season.
The Vols put up a three-spot in the second inning to jump out to an early lead. Derkay drove in the game's first run with a double to right field before two more runs came in to score on back-to-back wild pitches by Skyhawks' starter Dalton Westfall.
Derkay drove in another run with a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the third to increase the Tennessee lead to four.
Lipcius got in on the action with a two-run single in the fourth and Santiago made it 7-0 with his fifth home run of the year, an opposite-field solo blast in the bottom of the sixth.
The Big Orange scored another run in the seventh before exploding for seven runs in the eighth, including a bases-clearing three-run double by Santiago and a two-run single by Gobbell to give him the first two RBI of his career.
With 15 more runs on Wednesday, the Vols have now scored five or more runs in 10 of their 11 midweek games this season and have scored eight or more runs in seven of them. UT had nine players finish the game with a hit while 11 different players scored a run.
