Vols Top Cincinnati in Extras, 3-2
March 09, 2018 | Baseball
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Finishing the first nine innings before the two-hour mark, Tennessee triumphed in Friday's extra-inning, pitchers' duel against Cincinnati, plating the go-ahead run in the 12th inning to take game one of the series, 3-2, at Marge Schott Stadium.
Starting the game for the Volunteers, freshman left-hander Garrett Crochet went a career-long 8.0 innings and fired eight strikeouts, the most of any Tennessee pitcher this season before handing the ball over to Will Heflin and Zach Linginfelter in relief. Tennessee's pitchers combined for 14 strikeouts and walked just one batter in the outing.
Linginfelter tossed 2.2 shutout innings, fanning four batters to improve to 1-1 on the season and secure UT's first road win. Tennessee is now 9-6 overall and 1-0 on the road.
The Bearcats scored first in the game, plating one run in the top of the second inning on a single up the middle to take a 1-0 lead.
Cincinnati struck again in the fourth, taking advantage of an error by Tennessee shortstop Andre Lipcius to extend its lead, 2-0.
The Vols put runners on base in four of the first six innings before plating two runs in the seventh frame. With one out, Lipcius reached first on error by the Bearcats' shortstop, Manny Rodriguez. Senior catcher Benito Santiago then tripled to the left-center field gap to pull the Vols within one run. In the next at-bat, second baseman Jay Charleston hit an RBI-groundout to second, tying the game at 2-2.
After working out of a jam in the bottom of the eighth inning, Tennessee put two runners on in the ninth. Lipcius drilled a ball through the right side with two outs and advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt before Santiago walked to put runners on first and second. The inning ended on a strikeout before the Vols could plate a run.
Lefty reliever Heflin took the mound in the ninth, fanning two of his four batters faced to send the game to extras. To start the 10th, Brodie Leftridge and Wyatt Stapp reached base via walks, but were left stranded as the inning ended on a strikeout.
In the bottom of the frame, Cincinnati threatened and advanced their leadoff man to third on a hit, sacrifice bunt and stolen base. Linginfelter entered the game with one out and recorded back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning.
Cincinnati put runners in scoring position again in the 11th, with the first two batters reaching on a hit-by-pitch and walk before a sacrifice bunt advanced them to second and third, respectively. Quick thinking by sophomore first baseman Pete Derkay saw UT record a 3-2-5-2 second out before Linginfelter caught Cincinnati's Jordan Ramey swinging.
Tennessee's bats got hot in the 12th as the Vols scored the go-ahead run on two hits. With one out, Derkay knocked his fourth double of the season to left-center field before senior Leftridge drilled a ball to the left-field corner, sending Derkay home and putting the Vols up, 3-2.
Linginfelter retired the Bearcats in order to finish the game in the bottom of the 12th.
