Vols Drop Game Two of Weekend Series at #8 Ole Miss
March 17, 2018 | Baseball
Oxford, Miss. – Tennessee dropped the second game of its weekend series at No. 8 Ole Miss, 7-1, on Saturday afternoon at Oxford-University Stadium Swayze Field.
The Volunteers struggled against Rebels' starter Brady Feigl, who allowed just one run and struck out nine in 6.1 innings of work to improve to 5-0 on the year.
Sophomore outfielder Justin Ammons drove in the Vols' only run on the afternoon with a solo home run in the top of the fifth.
UT starter Garrett Stallings suffered his first loss of the season to fall to 3-1. The sophomore right hander gave up seven runs (four earned) and struck out three in six innings pitched.
The Rebels struck first for the second straight game, plating two runs in the bottom of the second inning. A two-out walk by Tyler Keenan started the rally for Ole Miss. Tim Rowe followed with a single and both runners came around to score on a double by Jacob Adams. An error in right field allowed the second run to score and Adams to reach third on the play. Adams finished the day 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI.
Ole Miss added another run in the bottom of the third and three more in the fourth after another double by Adams and an RBI groundout from Grae Kessinger to extend its lead to 6-0.
UT broke up Feigl's shutout bid with a solo home run by Ammons in the top of the fifth. The Memphis native hammered the first pitch he saw into the Tennessee bullpen in right field to cut the deficit to five.
The Vols were unable to take advantage of a huge opportunity to get back in the game with the bases loaded and nobody out in the sixth. Unfortunately, Feigl got Andre Lipcius to fly out to shallow right field and forced Benito Santiago to hit into a double play to escape the jam unscathed.
Kessinger drove in the final run of the game for Ole Miss with a double in the bottom of the sixth to make it 7-1.
The duo of Donovan Benoit and Redmond Walsh pitched well out of the bullpen for Tennessee, tossing two scoreless innings to finish out the game.
