Tennessee women shine in 74-48 win; UT men battle back to earn 59-59 tie
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Tennessee track and field program kicked off the new year with a bang on Saturday at the Tennessee-Indiana Dual at Gladstein Fieldhouse. The UT women took a 74-48 win over the Hoosiers and the UT men rallied late to earn a 59-59 tie.
"We were much improved in this meet," Tennessee director of track and field and cross country Beth Alford-Sullivan said. "This is a tough meet. We have winter break, we bring them back on Tuesday and we're competing on Saturday. We're very rusty, but Indiana is in the same thing. It's fun to come in and just compete. We've asked this team to learn how to compete. This is year three of this competition and we're figuring it out."
The UT women were dominant from the start, scoring big points in the sprints, hurdles, jumps and throws. Domonique Turner won the first event of the day, taking the 60-meter hurdles in 8.51. Shania Collins won the 60 meters in 7.48 and the 200 meters in 23.45, which marked the fastest time in the nation in this early indoor season. Felecia Majors took the 400 meters in 54.83.
Turner also placed first in the high jump with a height of 1.68 meters (5-6.00). Cidae'a Woods won the long jump at 5.95 meters (19-6.25). LaChyna Roe won the triple jump with a leap of 12.51 meters (41-0.50), breaking the 23-year-old meet record of 12.33 meters previously held by UT great Vickie Hudson.
Stamatia Scarvelis continued her dominance of the throws events. She won the shot put with a toss of 16.30 meters (55-5.75) and took the weight throw with a throw of 20.16 meters (66-1.75).
The Tennessee "A squad" of Brooklynn Broadwater, Collins, Lenysse Dyer and Majors won the women's 4x400 with a time of 3:40.75.
"The women had a dominant lead on Indiana and we held on to that," Alford-Sullivan said. "I was very proud of the efforts from the ladies' side all the way through. Shania Collins, Felecia Majors had great efforts today. Our relay and just across the board people showed up and competed well."
The Tennessee men did not field an entry in the 60-meter hurdles, so the Vols started the day with a deficit. Making his season debut, Mustaqeem Williams looked sharp, winning the 60 meters in 6.70 and the 200 meters in 20.99, which is the fastest time in the nation. Nathan Strother won the 400 meters by clocking a 46.45 to break the meet record of 47.30 set by Indiana great Sunder Nix in 1982.
Zach Long held on at the finish line to win the 3,000 meters in 8:11.06.
Newcomer Ingar Kiplesund, an early enrollee from this year's recruiting class, won the long jump, clearing 7.42 meters (24-4.25).
Tennessee's men's 4x400 "A team" of Ari Cogdell, Williams, Kwantreyl McConico and Strother won the event with a time of 3:10.08.
Jalen Tate and Weldon Wright came through for Tennessee in the triple jump at the very end of the meet. Tate won the event with a leap of 14.62 meters (47-11.75) and Wright took second with a jump of 14.30 meters (46-11.00) to score eight points needed for a 59-59 tie.
Alford-Sullivan said she was proud of the way the UT men battled back from the deficit and chipped away at Indiana's lead with each event.
"Great performances out of Mustaqeem Williams in the 60 meters and the 200 meters," she said. "He had three callbacks in the 60 meters and still kept his cool and ran a great time and then turned around in the 200 and ran one of the fastest times in the country at least at this time of day today. Nathan Strother took down a meet record from 1982 and Sunder Nix and to break his record is a great effort. I was very pleased. Strother is leading the country and looks to be in form. Much of the team really has some great competitive spirit and we can really grow from it."
Tennessee next heads to Birmingham, Alabama, to compete in the UAB Blazer Invite on Jan. 12 and the UAB Vulcan Invite on Jan. 13.
