Zach Long sets new UT record in men's 3,000m
CLEMSON, S.C. -- Juniors Zach Long and Stamatia Scarvelis posted individual wins and Tennessee's men's and women's 4x400 relays put up season-best times on Saturday at the Bob Pollock Invitational at Clemson Indoor Track.
UT finished the weekend with five wins. On Friday, Scarvelis won the women's shot put and Nathan Strother won the men's 400 meters. On Saturday, Long won the men's 3,000 meters, Scarvelis won the women's weight throw and the Tennessee A squad won the women's 4x400.
"The last two days, as all track meets have, had some highs and some lows," Tennessee Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Beth Alford-Sullivan said. "Overall, we finished very well. We're asking a lot from the team. My marker for an indoor season is always the last weekend of competition in January to see how we can predict out to a month from now when we get to the conference meet. Like I said, we had some really high highs and some things that probably just need a little more time. Overall, I was pretty satisfied. I thought we ended with a great result.
"We ended with a freshman school record in the weight throw with Georgios Korakidis and just a great competition there. We turned around and got a school record in the 3,000 meters with Zach Long. I think he will have another shot to break his own school record now. That was a 28-year-old school record and he just ran a tremendous race for that. The team came together at the end. I said to this team and I've been saying it all year long that Tennessee ends with relays and we ended big today with big improvements for the women and big improvements on the guys' side."
Long broke a 28-year-old Tennessee program record in the men's 3,000 meters with a winning time of 7:59.15. Long seized the lead from Alabama's Vincent Kiprop with just over two laps to go and ran a 28.91 final split to become the first Vol to break the eight-minute mark in the indoor 3K. VFL Glenn Morgan set the previous record at 8:00.42 in 1990.
Junior Stamatia Scarvelis continued her season-long dominance of the women's throwing events. After winning the shot put on Friday, Scarvelis won the weight throw on Saturday with a throw of 21.33 meters (69-11.75).
Georgios Korakidis set a new UT freshman record in the men's weight throw. On his second throw, Korakidis threw 19.66 meters (64-6.00), breaking the previous Tennessee freshman record of 19.62 meters (64-4.50) set by VFL legend Cameron Brown in 2013.
UT shined in the 4x400s thanks to strong anchor legs. The Tennessee A squad of Brooklynn Broadwater, Lenysse Dyer, Shania Collins and Felecia Majors won the women's 4x400 with a season-best time of 3:37.17. Majors ran a 52.99 split in the final leg.
The UT men's quartet of Ari Cogdell, Darryl Harris, Mustaqeem Williams and Nathan Strother clocked in at 3:07.08, which ranks fourth in school history. Strother ran an outstanding 44.70 anchor leg to bring the Vols back in the final 400 meters.
Tennessee will next compete in Clemson's Tiger Paw Invite and Washington's Husky Classic on Feb. 9.
"I think as we freshen up, clean up and get some nicks and knacks done, we will be back here in two weeks and be able to take it another step forward," Alford-Sullivan said. "I'm very confident in where this program is going for the conference championship next month and I'm very pleased with the record-setting stuff that these young people did here today."
