OPENING WEEKEND: The Vols swept a pair of doubleheaders last weekend, defeating Charlotte twice on opening day and then beating Tennessee Tech and Belmont by 6-1 scores Monday.Â
Georgia Tech's only team matches this year has been a pair of 7-0 victories over The Citadel. Georgia Tech hosted its annual MLK Invitational last week, a "hidden dual" style tournament and one of the final individual events in the region before team play gets into full swing.Â
TRIO OF DEBUTS: Three freshman Vols won their dual matches in Tennessee uniform: Adam Walton, Nicaise Muamba and Andrew Rogers. It was the first collegiate action for Muamba, who arrived to Knoxville a week before opening day from Laval, Quebec. He played No. 3 in the singles lineup, going 3-1.Â
Walton (Home Hill, Australia) strung together a combined 8-0 record on opening weekend, 4-0 at No. 4 singles and then 4-0 at No. 1 doubles with Preston Touliatos. Rogers (Brentwood, Tennessee) was 3-1 at No. 5 and 6 singles.
8-0 X 2: Walton wasn't the only Vol who started the spring 8-0; redshirt junior Preston Touliatos pulled off the same feat at No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles. Touliatos missed last season with shoulder surgery but has shown big improvements in his game since his return. He made the quarterfinals of regionals in the fall and is 11-2 overall this year.Â
WOODRUFF ERA UNDERWAY: Chris Woodruff begins his first spring season as head coach for the Vols. He was named head coach in May 2017. During his first 15 seasons as an assistant coach and associate head coach for the Vols, he helped the team to two SEC regular season titles (2010, 2011) and an SEC tournament title (2011). The 2018 squad is looking to return to the national stage after going 13-14 last season.Â
IN THE RANKINGS: Junior Timo Stodder is ranked No. 36 nationally for the Vols in the Oracle/ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings. Stodder is in his second year at the top of the singles lineup for Tennessee and opened this spring with a 4-0 record, including a win over No. 28 Eduardo Mena of Tennessee Tech. Stodder is a team-leading 16-4 overall this season.Â
