
Tennessee Posts 6 Wins In Indoor Debut at Hoosier Open

Big Orange enjoys strong start to indoor season with strong performances in a variety of events at Gladstein Fieldhouse
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Tennessee opened its 2018 indoor track and field season with wins in six events at Friday's Hoosier Open at Gladstein Fieldhouse.
The UT women combined for three victories. Junior Maia McCoy won the 200 meters in 24.27. Junior Stamatia Scarvelis finished first in the shot put with a career-long toss of 17.77 meters on her sixth and final attempt. Senior Cidae'a Woods won the long jump with a leap of 6.08 meters on her fourth attempt.
McCoy also finished third in the 60 meters with a PR time of 7.39. Sophomore Domonique Turner took third place in the women's high jump with a personal-best leap of 1.71 meters.
The Tennessee men posted three wins as well. Junior Kwantreyl McConico, who transferred to UT from Alabama-Huntsville, took the 200 meters with a meet-record time of 21.35. Freshman Jalen Tate won the triple jump with a leap of 14.96 meters on his first try. The quartet of junior Ari Cogdell, McConico, junior Darryl Harris and senior Nathan Strother raced to a win in the 4x400 with a meet-record time of 3:10.88.
Senior thrower Matthew Zajac placed third in the men's weight throw with a career-best toss of 20.52 meters, which he reached on his second try. Junior Seth Whitener took fourth in the weight throw with a toss of 20.45 meters on his fourth attempt. Strother ran a personal-best 33.16 to finish second in the 300 meters.
Freshman Nicholas Boogades used a late burst in his 1,000-meter heat to take the heat in 2:30.45 and finish fourth overall.
Tennessee will return to Gladstein Fieldhouse on Jan. 6 for the Tennessee-Indiana Dual Meet.
