October 28, 2011 | Football
Former Tennessee lineman Charles McRae is among those slated for induction Friday night into the Clinton High School Wall of Fame.
McRae earned All-SEC honors with the Vols in 1990 and the following spring became the only Clinton High graduate ever selected in the NFL Draft. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers chose McRae as the seventh overall pick of the 1991 first round.
After starring for Clinton on the football field and graduating in 1986, McRae stayed close to home and lettered four years with the Vols from 1987-90. He played his first two seasons on the defensive line before moving to offensive tackle as a junior in 1989.
McRae and the Vols flourished after the change.
Tennessee won the 1989 and 1990 SEC championships, going a combined 11-2-1 in conference play and 20-3-2 overall those two seasons. The Vols ended the years with wins over Arkansas in the 1990 Cotton Bowl and Virginia in the 1991 Sugar Bowl.
McRae was an All-SEC selection by the league coaches in 1990, made the SEC Academic Honor Roll that year and was recipient of the Toyota Leadership Award. He then was tabbed by Tampa Bay as the first of three Vols taken in the 1991 NFL Draft's first round and one of nine Tennessee players selected overall that year.McRae played for the Buccaneers from 1991-95 and then spent the 1996 season with the Oakland Raiders before retiring.
Before beginning pro football, McRae graduated from UT in 1991 with a bachelor's degree in history. He later returned in 2002 to complete his master's in business administration, which included induction to the Phi Kappa Phi honor society.
McRae currently serves as administrator and vice-president of finance at Vista Radiology and is chief manager of Integrated Practice Services. Earlier this month, McRae accepted the position of CEO at Columbus Radiology in Columbus, Ohio.
He and his wife, Lori, are the parents of four children: Connor, Isla, Iain and Sean.
The CHS Wall of Fame honors Clinton graduates who have had outstanding accomplishments in life. Friday night's ceremony is part of the Clinton-Anderson County football game.
McRae was inducted into the Anderson County Hall of Fame in 2008.
