Vols Ink 4-Year Hoops Deal with Ga. Tech
June 18, 2015 | Men's Basketball
Tennessee basketball coach Rick Barnes announced Thursday that the Vols have finalized a four-year series contract with Georgia Tech, beginning with a game at McCamish Pavilion in Atlanta on Nov. 16.
The Volunteers will host the Yellow Jackets during the 2016-17 and 2018-19 seasons and will play a second game in Atlanta in 2017-18. Dates for those three contests have yet to be determined.
This November's game in Atlanta will serve as a homecoming of sorts for four players on UT's roster, as Armani Moore (Kennesaw), Devon Baulkman (Bainbridge), Jabari McGhee (Albany) and Shembari Phillips (Atlanta) all hail from the state of Georgia.
Tennessee leads the all-time series with Georgia Tech 42-27, dating to 1921. When the series is contested in Atlanta, Tech holds an 18-15 advantage.
The programs met annually from 1945-68 (Tech was a member of the SEC from 1932-64). The most recent meeting came in February 2004, when the Yellow Jackets posted a 77-62 win in Knoxville. That snapped an eight-game Tennessee win streak in the series.
The Vols are 105-96 all-time against current members of the ACC.
Tennessee head coach Rick Barnes is 5-3 all-time against Georgia Tech. All of those meetings came during Barnes' tenure as head coach at Clemson from 1994-98.
The upcoming campaign marks the Yellow Jackets' fifth season under head coach Brian Gregory, who preceded his tenure in Atlanta with an eight-year stint as the head coach at Dayton.
