KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee Lady Vol volleyball team took a break from solely practicing against itself this spring, welcoming the University of Alabama at Birmingham for a scrimmage Saturday at Pratt Pavilion.
It was the first time that the Big Orange squared off against another opponent since the 2011 season concluded in December, as the teams participated in drills, followed by an exhibition match.
The Lady Vols and Blazers played three sets under normal rules, with UT reaching 25 first in two of the three sets.
Rising sophomore Tiffany Baker tallied a team-best 12 kills on the afternoon, while rising junior Kelsey Robinson ranked second in that category with seven.
As a team the Big Orange registered eight aces, four of which came from rising sophomore Mary Pollmiller. Pollmiller also had seven digs, just one behind rising junior Ellen Mullins, who led the team with eight.
Tennessee also had 15 blocks versus UAB, led by redshirt freshman Mercedes Vaughn, who sent five Blazer attacks back.
The 2011 Southeastern Conference champions return the core of last season's team that went 28-4 overall and 19-1 against the conference.
