BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- For the second time outdoors and the third time this season, Tennessee senior Annie Alexander has been named SEC Track & Field Women's Field Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday afternoon.
Alexander, who hails from Port-of-Spain, Trinidad & Tobago, won the shot put and finished second in the discus throw at the Tennessee Challenge on April 7. She has won all three outdoor shot competitions in 2012 and has finished first in two of three discus throw outings.
Last Saturday, she won the shot put with a toss of 54 feet, six inches to card the 13th outdoor title of her career with that implement. The 2011 NCAA Outdoor third-place finisher and SEC champion currently ranks fourth in the NCAA this season with a best heave of 56-5 ¼.
In the discus throw, Alexander posted a season-best effort of 181-4 to take second at the Tennessee Challenge. Even though she suffered her first defeat of the campaign in that event, she moved to No. 5 on the NCAA list this season. She also finished third in that event at last year's NCAA Outdoor meet and is the defending conference champ as well.
This is Alexander's second weekly league accolade outdoors, matching the honor she garnered on March 27. She also was honored earlier this season on Jan. 24 as the SEC Indoor Women's Field Athlete of the Week.
Alexander and her Tennessee teammates will compete at home again this week, as they take part in the 46th-annual Sea Ray Relays, Thursday through Saturday.
