Sophomore swimmer Kelsey Floyd highlighted another fast and successful prelim round for the Lady Vol swimmers as she set a new school record in the 200y fly on Saturday morning at the 2011 SEC Championships held at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center.
Already owning the previous-best record in the event, Floyd enters the championship finals with the fastest prelim time of 1:54.97. The mark is just .02 second shy of being an NCAA automatic qualifier. Joining Floyd in the `A' final will be sophomore Brooke Watson, who claimed eighth with a time of 1:59.08.
Freshman Kennedy Higdon and senior Tricia Weaner will compete in the consolation finals of the event after grabbing 11th and 13th. Higdon's mark of 2:00.21 was a career best, while Weaner touched in at 2:00.66 to secure a B-cut time.
In the 200y breast, senior Martina Moravcikova and junior Kirstyn Colonias each touched in with career-best clocking.
Moravcikova earned a spot in the `A' final by finishing third with a time of 2:11.25. The readout is the third fastest in Lady Vol history and a B-cut time. Colonias just missed qualifying for the championship final as she took ninth after swimming a 2:12.37. The B-cut time is the ninth-fastest in the Tennessee record books.
Sophomore Lauren Solernou registered the squad's best finish in the 200y back, claiming seventh with a mark of 1:56.04 to earn a spot in the championship final. Her time ranks seventh on UT's performers list and is also an NCAA B-cut and career-best readout.
A pair of Lady Vols will be in the `B' final of the event, as sophomore Mary Kate McNeilis and Weaner finished ninth and 10th, respectively. McNeilis touched in at 1:56.26, a career best time that ranks eighth on the Lady Vol performers list. Weaner recorded a B-cut and season-best time of 1:56.27.
Freshman Alex Frasier is the lone competitor to represent the Big Orange in the 100y free. The New Bedford, Mass., native grabbed 18th after a career-best mark of 49.91. The time is an NCAA B-cut standard and ranks eighth on the UT performers list.
Senior Aleksa Akerfelds and freshman Lindsay Gendron will be in action for the 1650y free prior to the finals of the other events. Along with the mile swim, the 400y free relay will also take place.
