KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Record-setting senior track & field athlete Jackie Areson has been voted the Lady Vol Athlete of the Week after her performance at the Penn State National meet in University Park, Pa. on Saturday.
Areson, who hails from Delray Beach, Fla., broke the indoor school record in the 3000 meters for the second time in as many seasons, covering the distance in nine minutes, 1.91 seconds to surpass her previous University of Tennessee-best of 9:07.27. That mark was set at the 2010 Penn State National.
In addition to rewriting the school standard, Areson also broke the meet record as well as the facility record at the Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track. Her mark, which automatically qualified her for the NCAA Indoor Championship meet on March 11-12, also ranks her No. 3 in the NCAA this season and No. 1 in the SEC.
Areson, who remains undefeated in the 3000m and mile in 2011, will have this weekend off before heading west to compete in the Husky Classic in Seattle, Wash., on Feb. 11-12. She set the UT indoor 5000m record there last season before breaking it again later at the NCAA Championship meet.
While Areson is idle, her teammates will head to New York City to compete in the New Balance Collegiate Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The meet is held at the Armory in northern Manhattan.
