KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - For the second time in less than a month, Tennessee Lady Vol setter Mary Pollmiller has been named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week, in addition to the Big Orange advancing four spots in the most recent AVCA Coaching Poll rankings released on Monday.
Pollmiller, a native of Littleton, Colo., earned this week's award after two great performances on the road against LSU and Arkansas. The setter notched a double-double versus the Tigers, recording 50 assists and 13 digs. By dishing out 50 helpers at LSU, Pollmiller has now registered at least 50 assists in nine matches this season.
Pollmiller had a hand in 80 percent of the kills this past weekend, as she tallied 92 of Tennessee's 102 assists and added five kills of her own. On the season, her average of 12.43 assists per set ranks first in the SEC.
She was also awarded the honor on Sept. 12, after she helped the Orange and White to three victories at the Virginia Tech Invitational and was listed on the all-tournament team.
This is the second week in a row that a member of the Lady Vol volleyball team was recognized by the SEC, as a week ago sophomore Carly Sahagian was named the conference's Offensive Player of the Week, while junior DeeDee Harrison was selected the SEC Defensive Player of the Week.
After a re-entry into the AVCA coaching poll last week at No. 23, Tennessee catapulted up the ranking and now finds itself at No. 19 with 361 points after sweeping its four-match SEC road trip and winning nine consecutive matches.
Pollmiller and the rest of the Lady Vols return home this weekend for a pair of matches against Alabama and Ole Miss. Friday's match against the Crimson Tide will be "Dig for the Cure," while a post match clinic will be available on Sunday at the conclusion of the Ole Miss match.
