UT's Wright Takes Sixth In Monaco

MONACO -- Former University of Tennessee standout Phoebe Wright dipped below two minutes in her second straight race and earned a sixth-place finish in the 800-meter run Thursday at the Herculis Monaco meet at Stade Louis II.
Wright, who ran a school-record readout of one minute, 58.22 seconds at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Ore., on July 7, covered the distance this time in 1:59.21 to card a respectable middle of the pack outcome in an invitation-only field of 12 that was participating in the IAAF Samsung Diamond League series. U.S. teammate Alysia Johnson earned the victory, producing a world-leading mark of 1:57.34 to hold off Great Britain's Jemma Simpson (1:58.74) for the title.
Among the stated objectives when the IAAF Samsung Diamond League was created was to provide greater frequency of competition between the big names of track & field. The 2010 series features 14 meets around the world. Only four stops remain in 2010, including Stockholm, London, Zurich and Brussels. It is not clear at this time as to whether Wright will run at any of those competitions.
