KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Third-ranked Virginia Tech and No. 10 Michigan will join the No. 21 Lady Volunteers among the dozens of schools competing in the annual Sea Ray Relays at the University of Tennessee???s Tom Black Track at LaPorte Stadium. The meet gets underway on Wednesday and Thursday with the women???s heptathlon and men???s decathlon and swings into high gear on Friday and Saturday with action running all day long. Admission is free.
Women???s teams joining the Big Orange include Alabama and Kentucky from the SEC; the Hokies and North Carolina State from the ACC; the Wolverines, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio State and Wisconsin from the Big Ten; and Cincinnati, Connecticut, Georgetown, Louisville, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Seton Hall and West Virginia from the BIG EAST. San Diego State will bring its team the farthest, while in-state representation includes Austin Peay, Bryan, Carson-Newman, Chattanooga, East Tennessee State, Middle Tennessee and Milligan.
Individually, there will be a number of notable athletes in attendance, as they continue their preparation for this summer???s Olympic Trials and Olympic Games in Beijing. From UT and 2008 U.S. Olympic women???s middle distance coach J.J. Clark???s camp in Knoxville are five-time Olympian and American 800m record-holder Jearl Miles-Clark, two-time Olympian and three-time U.S. Outdoor 800m champ Hazel Clark-Riley, as well as Treniere Clement, the winner of the last three U.S. Outdoor titles in the 1500m. Ginny Miller-Johnson, 2006 U.S. Outdoor heptathlon champ and former Arkansas standout, will be on hand competing in a variety of individual events, while Trinidad & Tobago???s Cleopatra Borel-Brown, 10th in the 2004 Olympic Games, is slated to be in action in the throws. Nike???s Mary (Danner) Wineberg, the 2007 U.S. Outdoor bronze medalist in the 400m and a gold winner with the U.S. 4x400m relay at the 2007 outdoor World Championships, is another to watch.
There will be former Lady Vols taking part, as well, as they continue their pursuit for post-collegiate success. After completing her Lady Vol career in 1987 with nine All-America accolades, Alisa Harvey is still running strong and ranks as one of this country???s top masters athletes. Eleven-time All-American Nicole Cook, the 2004 NCAA Indoor 800m champ and the 2005 collegiate record-holder in that event, is on a quest to make the U.S. Olympic Team in 2008. Also expected to compete this week are ex-UT middle distance/relay All-American Kameisha Bennett-Martin, 400m All-American Patricia Hall and distance standout Katie Flaute.
As for the 2008 Lady Vols, the entries will begin with sophomore Jena??? Murphy (Memphis, Tenn.) undertaking her first career heptathlon on Friday and Saturday and will run the gamut from sprints and distances to jumps and throws to nearly all of the relays on Friday and Saturday. UT is slated to compete in the 4x200m relay on Friday and in the distance medley, 4x100m, 4x800m and 4x400m baton events on Saturday. Tennessee has qualified for the NCAA Mideast Regional in the 4x100 with a time of 44.98 but is seeking one in the 4x4. Clark also will be eyeing sharp performances in the 4x2, 4x8 and DMR as the Lady Vols prepare to run those events in front of huge crowds in two weeks at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia.
Tennessee enters the Sea Ray Relays with 10 athletes qualified for 14 scoring opportunities in 10 different events for the NCAA Mideast Regional meet, which will be held May 30-31 in Fayetteville, Ark. The group includes freshman Annie Alexander (Trinidad & Tobago) in the discus and shot, junior Sarah Bowman (Warrenton, Va.) in the 800m and 1500m, senior Shanna Dickenson (Cincinnati, Ohio) in the discus and hammer, junior Alicia Essex (Purcellville, Va.) in the pole vault, junior Celriece Law (Denver, Colo.) in the 100m hurdles, sophomore Lynne Layne (New Rochelle, N.Y.) in the 100m, senior LaTonya Loche (Bastrop, La.) in the 400m, freshman Jeneba Tarmoh (San Jose, Calif.) in the 100m and 200m dashes and sophomore Phoebe Wright (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) in the 800m. UT???s 4x100m relay group includes Tarmoh, senior Cleo Tyson (Huntsville, Texas), Loche and Layne.
Saturday also will feature a ceremony honoring the 2008 Tennessee women???s and men???s seniors. That event is slated to take place on the track in front of the main grandstand press box at 11:45 a.m.
