Thomas Joins MSU Track And Field Staff

STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Mississippi State Head Track and Field Coach Al Schmidt announced Monday the addition of April Thomas as assistant track coach. The hiring is pending the approval of the Board of Trustees, Institutions of Higher Learning.
"April comes from a national championship program and a SEC championship program at Tennessee and we are excited to have her," said Schmidt. "I think it makes our future very, very bright."
Thomas comes to MSU after coaching boys??? and girls??? shot put and discus at Knoxville (Tenn.) Catholic High School. She also coached with the Knoxville (Tenn.) Track Club.
A native of Albany, Ga., Thomas earned her degree in sociology from University of Tennessee in 2007. Prior to UT, she competed at Cloud County (Kansas) Community College. At the 2006 SEC Indoor Championships, Thomas finished as runner-up in the shot put. She also has three other top five SEC finishes to her credit in the event. She currently ranks fifth on UT???s all-time outdoor performers list in the shot put and hammer throw and fourth on the school???s all-time indoor performers list in the shot put and weight throw. Thomas helped UT win the 2005 SEC Indoor Championship. She was part of Tennessee???s 2005 NCAA Mideast Regional team that captured the program's first victory at that event.
