Select members of the Tennessee men's track and field team will compete Saturday at the Indiana Open in Bloomington, Ind.
"We are taking a limited group to Indiana," head coach Bill Webb said. "This meet is similar to the Clemson meet in December, but we are coming back from Christmas and New Year's break. We want to see the fitness levels of the guys after the break, and we have specific things we want the individuals to work on during this meet. Since the team is not in class yet, we can take our time getting there. Indiana has a great track and it's a good opportunity for us to see where we are technically. The freshman sprinters and hurdlers will also get a good chance to see where they are entering the season.
Five-time All-America Chris Helwick, who also holds the Tennessee school record in the heptathlon, will open his indoor season this weekend. Helwick along with the other multi-event athletes Jangy Addy and Alex Dobranowski are all expected to compete in the shot put, high jump and 60-meter dash.
Richard Wooten and Nick Panezich will be the Vols' only throwers making the trip. Wooten recorded a personal-best mark in the weight throw last time out on his way to a win in the event at the Clemson Opener, while Panezich finished third in the shot put. Both athletes are expected to compete in the weight throw and shot put this weekend. James Jones and Brenard Wilson tied for fifth in the high jump at the Clemson Opener and will both contest the event in Bloomington.
All-America junior Matthieu Pritchett is scheduled to run the 60 with freshmen Kyle Stevenson and Evander Wells. Freshman De'Lon Isom, who finished fifth in the 60 hurdles at the Clemson Opener, will be Tennessee's lone representative in that event. Senior Jacob Dennis will be joined by freshmen John Hewitt and Nathan Grace in the 400. The Vols will also send out a 4x400 relay team, but the quartet will be decided just before the race.
The Indiana Open starts with the long jump and 60 hurdles at noon, and continues through the afternoon before concluding with the 4x400 relay at 3:05 p.m.
