Tennessee moved up to fifth in this week's U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association poll.
Texas took the top spot this week from Arkansas, which fell to second.
Florida State remained third, while LSU moved up one spot to fourth. Tennessee bumped Wisconsin out of the top five this week as the Badgers fell to sixth.
Florida (14th), South Carolina (15th) and Auburn (17th) join the Vols, Tigers and Razorbacks to give the SEC six teams in the poll, which recognizes the top 20. Complete rankings are available at www.ustfccca.com.
Tennessee is ranked sixth in the Trackwire 25 ranking. The Vols have been ranked sixth all four weeks the poll has been published this season. The rankings project the Vols will score 26 points at the NCAA indoor championships.
Florida State retained its top ranking, but Texas jumped Arkansas and into a first-place tie with the Seminoles at 46 projected points each. Wisconsin is ranked third with 45, followed by Arkansas in fourth with 43 and LSU fifth with 39 points. Other ranked SEC schools include Florida (13th, 17 points), South Carolina (15th-tie, 12 points), Alabama (19th-tie, 11 points) and Auburn (24th-tie, 9 points).
The Trackwire 25 rankings, available at www.trackwire.com, are based primarily on individual leader lists for each of the events contested in the NCAA indoor championships and other factors. The resulting formchart, the "Dandy Dozen," is used to predict team finishes at the NCAA indoor championships.
CROSS OUT FOR INDOOR SEASON
Vol Paul Cross will not be eligible to compete during the indoor track and field season because of academic concerns, head coach Bill Webb announced Wednesday. His status for the outdoor postseason will be determined at the end of the spring semester.
On the whole, Tennessee's track and field/cross country squad boasted a strong fall semester academically as 22 Vols earned 3.0 GPAs or better, including three 4.0s. Track and field captains Chris Helwick and Jim Sexton made the list, as did cross country captains Matthew Lapp and Zach Sabatino.
Additionally, the list of academic honorees included Jangy Addy, Andy Baksa, Jeff Day, Jacob Dennis, Tyler DeVault, Michael Hogue, Anthony Immediate, Todd Jones, Andy Lane, Ben Lukowski, Brian Mills, Tim Nguyen, Matt Piccarello, Andrew Scarbrough, Brent Smith, Jeff Trembley, Lee Trembley and Richard Wooten.
Tennessee's track and field squad leads the conference with 133 selections to the SEC Academic Honor Roll during the Bill Webb era (1996-present).
