KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Junior standout swimmer Megan Tomes has been named the Southeastern Conference Swimmer of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday. It marks the third time in Tomes' career at Rocky Top that she has been so honored.
Tomes, from Cincinnati, Ohio, won both individual events she entered against the fourth-ranked Florida Gators on Jan. 28, as well as anchoring the victorious 200y freestyle relay squad. In the 200y IM, Tomes stopped the clock in an NCAA provisional qualifying and season-best time of 2:01.04. She also eclipsed the "B" standard in the 500y freestyle with a season-best readout of 4:53.52.
Tomes and the Lady Vols return to action at the Southeastern Conference Swimming and Diving Championships from Feb. 15-18 at the UT Student Aquatic Center. The venue has played host to seven previous SEC Championships (1968, 1973, 1975, 1979, 1986, 1988 and 1996). UT used its home pool advantage to a third-place result in 1996.
