KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Two-time NCAA long jump champion Tianna Madison will be among three current University of Tennessee women and three former Lady Vols traveling to Carson, Calif., to compete in the USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships at the Home Depot Center on June 23-26.
Madison, a sophomore from Elyria, Ohio, will compete in the senior division along with former UT standouts Kameisha Bennett (800m), Sharon Dickie (5000m) and Dee Dee Trotter (400m). Taking part in the junior portion of the meet will be Madison's current Big Orange teammates, freshmen Shanna Dickenson (discus) and Cleo Tyson (100m/200m).
Lady Vol Head Coach J.J. Clark will also have additional post-collegiate performers competing, including his wife, Jearl Miles-Clark (800m), his sister, Hazel Clark (800m), as well as former Florida standout Kristina Bratton (800m), ex-Georgetown star Treniere Clement (1500m) and Appalachian State product Mary Jayne Harrelson (1500m).
At stake for the senior level competitors will be a trip to the IAAF World Championships in Helsinki, Finland, on Aug. 6-14. For Dickenson and Tyson, meanwhile, there will be opportunities to earn spots on teams traveling to the IAAF World Youth Championships in Marrakesh, Morocco, on July 13-17 or the Pan Am Juniors in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, on July 28-31.
Madison enters the USATF Championships as the top-ranked American long jumper and has been the dominant collegiate performer in her event, winning both the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor titles and claiming victory in her last 10 competitions this season. Her wind-legal, 22 feet, 4 1/2-inch jump at the Gatorade Classic on April 9 is the leading U.S. mark and rates number two in the world. The second-year UT performer, however, also has a wind-aided leap of 22-8.50, which she charted on May 14 at the SEC Championships with a slightly illegal tailwind of 2.2 meters per second.
Tyson will be among the favorites in the junior sprint events, as the Huntsville, Texas, product is coming off a stellar rookie season that saw her pick up five All-America citations, win the SEC Outdoor 100-meter dash and uncork careers bests of 11.25 and 22.88 in the 100m and 200m, respectively. Most recently, she pocketed NCAA Outdoor finishes of second in the 100m and third in the 200m in addition to anchoring UT's 4x100m relay to third in a school-record time. Dickenson, from Cincinnati, Ohio, was 11th in the discus throw at the SEC Outdoor Championships and 12th at the NCAA Mideast Regional and carded a season-best toss of 161 feet, two inches at the Knoxville Twilight in May.
Of the former Lady Vols in action, Trotter enters with the highest profile. The native of Decatur, Ga., won a gold medal with the U.S. 4x400m relay at the 2004 Olympic Games and produced a fifth-place finish in the 400 meters in Athens at the conclusion of her junior season. After turning pro and foregoing her senior year, Trotter enters with a qualifying mark of 50.00, which is second fastest behind Monique Hennagan (49.56).
In the 800 meters, Miles-Clark (1:57.27), Clark (1:59.30) and Bennett (1:59.99) rank one-two-three, and Bratton is seventh at 2:03.00. In the 1500 meters, Clement and Harrelson enter with times of 4:08.87 and 4:13.21, which seed them fourth and 13th. Dickie, meanwhile, is seventh in the 5000 meters at 15:45.59.
The Lady Vol competition schedule is as follows: Dickenson (jr. discus final, 5:15 p.m. ET Thurs.), Madison (long jump final, 8:10 p.m. ET Fri.) and Tyson (jr. 100m prelims/final, 5:30 p.m./9:40 p.m. ET Thurs.; jr. 200m prelims/final, 5:40 p.m./10:50 p.m. ET Fri.).
Former UT athlete itineraries include Bennett (800m 1st/Semis/Final, 7:40 p.m. ET Thurs./10:20 p.m. ET Fri./6:07 p.m. ET Sun.), Dickie (5000m final, 10:15 p.m. Thurs.) and Trotter (400m 1st/Semis/Final, 7 p.m. ET Thurs./10 p.m. ET Fri./5:02 p.m. ET Sat.).
