KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Lady Volunteers, who finished third at last weekend's Southeastern Conference Outdoor Championships in Nashville, are fifth in this week's Trackwire national poll and are among five league schools currently ranked in the top 25.
Texas maintains its firm grip on the top spot with 64 points, followed by No. 2 South Carolina (53), No. 3 UCLA (51), Miami (39) and Tennessee (36). Rounding out the top 10 are Stanford (35), Georgia (30), USC (24), Nebraska (22) and Washington State (21). Other ranked SEC schools this week include No. 11 Alabama (19) and No. 21 Arkansas (12).
The Trackwire 25 projects a hypothetical score for the NCAA meet, factoring in injury reports and other variables supported by information gathered from coaches and NCAA-qualifying competitions across the country. This projection is generated by scoring the Dandy Dozen, a power ranking of the top 12 athletes and relay squads in each NCAA event.
Lady Vols ranked in the seventh edition of the outdoor Dandy Dozen in 2005 include Cleo Tyson (3rd) and Toyin Olupona (11th) in the 100 meters; Tyson (3rd) in the 200 meters; Patricia Hall (8th) in the 400 meters and Tianna Madison (1st) in the long jump. UT's 4x100m and 4x400m relays are rated second and sixth, respectively. The UT women are off this weekend, but they travel to Bloomington, Ind., next Thursday to compete in the NCAA Mideast Regional meet at Indiana University on May 27-28. That competition serves as the qualifying meet for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in June.
