KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee volleyball team (20-8) completes regular-season play with a single contest at the Irish Thanksgiving Classic versus No. 7 Notre Dame (28-2). The match begins at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
The Big Orange went 1-1 at the SEC Tournament last weekend, prevailing over Mississippi State, 30-15, 30-21, 30-27, before falling to the host school, Alabama, in a tight contest, 30-26, 18-30, 18-30, 31-29, 15-13.
Notre Dame followed up a co-regular season Big East Conference championship (shared with No. 9 Louisville) with a 28-30, 31-29, 30-21, 23-30, 15-8 win on Sunday at Louisville in the conference tournament's title tilt.
The match will serve as the first meeting between the schools.
Notre Dame is in the midst of its best season since the 1994 team went 33-4. This weekend's tournament marks the first time that the Fighting Irish have played home matches over Thanksgiving weekend.
The Fighting Irish are led on the stat sheet by Lauren Brewster (3.94 kills/game, .320 hitting percentage and 1.59 blocks/game), Ashley Tarutis (12.89 assists/game) and Meg Henican (4.72 digs/game).
The contest will be broadcast on Comcast Sports Southeast (CSS) on a tape-delay basis at 7 p.m. on Thursday and 2 p.m. next Friday. The match will also be broadcast on a trio of Midwest television stations: Comcast cable channel 3 in South Bend (7 p.m. on Thursday), Comcast Local in Michigan (9 p.m. on Wednesday) and Comcast Sports Net Chicago (7 p.m. CST on Wednesday and 1 p.m. on Thursday).
For a monthly charge of $6.95, fans can access an audio broadcast of the contest via Fighting Irish All-Access Monthly at www.cstv.com.
The NCAA Selection Show will be aired live at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday on ESPNews.
The first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament will take place on consecutive dates at campus sites (to be revealed on the Selection Show) between Dec. 1-4. Tennessee has put in a bid to serve as a host school.
The regional championships occur from Dec. 9-10. The four host cities are Omaha, Neb., University Park, Pa., Stanford, Calif., and College Station, Texas. All four regional championship matches will be broadcast by ESPNU. Three will be shown live and one will be broadcast on a tape-delay basis.
The national semifinals and championship match will be contested in San Antonio, Texas. The semifinals take place on Dec. 15 and will be broadcast live on ESPNU at 7 and 9 p.m. CST. Both contests will also be shown on a tape-delay basis on ESPN2. The national championship match can be viewed live on ESPN2 at 6 p.m. on Dec. 17.
