KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - For her excellent play at the Southeastern Conference Tournament last week, University of Tennessee volleyball senior setter Julie Knytych (LaGrange Park, Ill.) earned honors as a member of the All-SEC Tournament Team. In UT's two matches, she helped lead the Lady Vol offense to a dominating 30-15, 30-21, 30-27 sweep of Mississippi State and a tight loss to host Alabama, 30-26, 18-30, 18-30, 31-29, 15-13, in the semifinal round.
For the tournament, Knytych recorded 10.62 assists/game (85 total) and also contributed 2.38 digs/game (19 total the third-highest sum on the team in tournament play) to the Lady Vol effort.
In the win on Friday versus MSU, Knytych moved into fourth place on the all-time SEC career assists chart, passing former Bulldog Jenny Hazelwood, who had 5,505 helpers from 1996-99. Knytych currently has 5,562 and trials third place on the charts by 105 as Georgia's Jenny McDowell tallied 5,667 from 1984-87.
At the SEC banquet on Thursday, Knytych earned Second Team All-SEC accolades.
The LaGrange Park, Ill., native also earned honors on the All-SEC Tournament Team last year after helping lead the Lady Vols to the 2004 SEC Tournament title.
Knytych and the Lady Vols conclude regular-season play at the Irish Thanksgiving Classic in Notre Dame, Ind., with a match versus host and No. 7 Notre Dame (27-2) at 7 p.m. on Saturday. The Fighting Irish claimed a co-regular season Big East Conference crown before following that up with a tournament title with a 3-2 win at No. 9 Louisville on Sunday.
