Van Reenan Highlights Day's Action With Fifth-Place Finish In 10,000-meters
RALEIGH, N.C. - Senior Erika van Reenan finished fifth in the 10,000-meters to pace the University of Tennessee women's track and field team as it opened competition on Friday at the adidas Raleigh Relays at the Paul Derr Track on the campus of North Carolina State University.
Van Reenan (Norcoss, Ga.) finished fifth in the 10,000m with a clocking of 35:10.04, which is a provisional NCAA qualifying time and a personal record. Her time is also the fourth fastest in Tennessee history and the best by an UT woman since Susan Baxter's time of 34:50.6 on March 27, 1982. This was also the first outing of the year in the 10,000m for the senior transfer from Clemson University. Junior Samantha Coulson (Roswell, Ga.) also had a strong outing as she recorded a 19th-place finish in the 400m with a time of 57.40.
Friday's events also saw a number of Lady Vols make collegiate and outdoor debuts in events. Freshman Jessica Southers (Ashland, Ky.) made her first outing in the 5,000m and ran a time of 18:00.82 to finish 50th overall. Freshman Keena Brooks (Temple Hills, Md.) competed in the 100m for the first time outdoors and ran a clocking of 13.35 to finish 80th overall. Junior Aoife Hearne (Waterford, Ireland) also competed in the 100m and marked a time of 12.64 to take 39th. Sophomore Amber Ayub (Knoxville, Tenn.) was Tennessee's lone competitor in the 400m intermediate hurdles and registered a time of 1:11.75 to finish 66th.
Freshman Sonya Bell (Charlotte, N.C.) also made her collegiate debut as she competed in the discus for the first time this year. She recorded an initial throw of 92-1/28.06m, but then faulted on her last two attempts to finish 38th. In other field events, senior Erica Tittsworth (Racine, Wis.) narrowly missed her personal-best mark in the long jump. Her opening measurement of 18-5/5.61m was good for 14th overall and was her best mark of the day. With an opening height of 5-5/1.65m on the high jump, freshman Kelly Flowers (Westerville, Ohio) failed to clear a height in her first three attempts.
The Lady Vols will continue action at the adidas Raleigh Relays on Saturday with Rebecca Collins in the 3,000m steeplechase and Renn Watkins in the 1,500m, as well as the 4x100m relay and Mandy Bergey in the pole vault. Senior Diane Slinden will be in action on the West Coast at the UC San Diego Spring Break Open in LaJolla, Calif.
