Tennessee's swimming and diving team will participate in this weekend's Southeastern Conference East Extravaganza at Gainesville, Fla. The meet will run from Thursday through Saturday.
The Vols, who swept last year's SEC East Extravaganza, will be facing four familiar foes in host Florida, Kentucky, South Carolina and Georgia. Tennessee went on to finish No. 3 at the NCAA Championships, the highest finish for the Vols since winning the national title in 1978.
"This is a much earlier time and a much different format from last year," said Tennessee head coach John Trembley. "This will be a very good opportunity for all the teams in the SEC East to assess what needs to be attacked from Oct. through March."
The men's 1-meter and women's 3-meter diving will kick off the four-day event Thursday, beginning at 6 p.m. Men's 3-meter and women's 1-meter diving begins Friday, at 11 a.m., followed by a 4 p.m. meet between Georgia and the host Florida. Tennessee and South Carolina will square off at 6 p.m.
Saturday's slate includes a 9 a.m. meet between Kentucky and South Carolina, while Georgia will conclude round-robin play against Tennessee at 11 a.m.
The SEC Invitational, which includes competition in the 200-yard medley relay, 100-yard backstroke, 100-yard breaststroke, 100-yard butterfly, 400-yard individual medley, 200-yard freestyle relay and the 1,650-yard freestyle, wraps up Saturday's festivities at 6 p.m.
The Vols return home Oct. 19 to host SEC rivals LSU and Kentucky at the Student Aquatic Center.
