INDIANAPOLIS - Rising junior Monica Shannahan represented the University of Tennessee swimming team at the United States Swimming Olympic Trials on Saturday.
Shannahan swam in the preliminaries of the 200-meter butterfly on Saturday with a time of 2:19.81. The time placed her 63rd overall out of a field of 88 swimmers. She finished fifth in her heat of eight competitors.
A native of San Diego, Calif., Shannahan has already competed in the 100 fly at the trials. She was UT's lone swimming representative at the 2000 NCAA Championship where she competed in the 200 fly and 100 breast. Shannahan was an All-American in 1999 in the 200 fly and with the 400 medley relay team.
The Olympic Trials continue through Wednesday, August 16, with races each morning and evening at the Indiana University Natatorium. Shannahan will compete again on Sunday in the 200 breast while fellow Lady Vol Pam Hanson will return to the pool on Monday for the 200m back. Hanson has already competed in one event at the 2000 trials while UT alumna Emily Plummer and future Lady Vol Jenny Hettich have also made appearances in the pool.
