Vols Conclude Sea Ray Relays With Successful Relay Day
April 15, 2000 | Men's Track
KNOXVILLE, Tenn.-- Tennessee concluded the 34th-annual Sea Ray Relays on Saturday by posting a victory in the distance medley relay. Team members Marcus Tanner, Stephen Harris, Jebreh Harris and Anthony Famiglietti notched a season-best time of 9:44.15, 1.99 seconds ahead of the second place squad.
The rest of the Sea Rays field marked the closing day by setting two additional meet records. Kevin Toth of Nike and Andy Bloom of Nike traded the shot put meet record for several throws before Toth's 70-5 won the day. Bloom broke the record first before Toth obliterated the previous record of 68-7 1/2 set by Minnesota's Ron Backes in 1986. Additionally, South Carolina shaved .12 of a second off the previous Sea Ray Relays 4x100M relay record. Clint Crenshaw, Terrence Trammell, Jimmie Hackley and Corey Taylor sped to a 39.04 finish.
The male Tony Wilson Award for the meet's outstanding athlete went to Trammell for track. The field co-winners were Toth and Phil McMullen of Asics, who won the decathlon with 8,097 points in unfavorable weather conditions.
Tennessee's second-place shuttle hurdle relay team (Karl Jennings, Rocky Danners, Matt Rush, Hassaan Stamps) finished in 57.13. The Vols posted a third-place finish in the 4x400M relay in a season-best 3:08.25. Tennessee's 4x1500M relay team took third in a season-best 15:40.35 effort. The Vols' 4x100M relay team crossed the line in 40.20 to earn fifth.
Individually, Tim Bell cleared 7-1 in the invitational high jump to finish third. Tyler Garrett marked a season-best heave of 56-5 1/4 in the invitational shot put. Clint Binder also finished the day with a season-best effort of 16-7 1/4 in the invitational pole vault to stand seventh. Toby Colyer threw the javelin 209-6 to finish sixth.
Tennessee hits the road next weekend for the National Invitational Team Championships in Austin, Texas on Friday and Saturday.
