Lady Vols Face Challenging Opposition At Gator Invite

13-Team Field Includes #1 LSU, #7 Auburn & #17 Florida In Non-Scored Meet
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee women's track and field team will have an opportunity to measure itself against a field of NCAA-caliber athletes on Sunday, as Coach Myrtle Ferguson's squad competes in the Gator Invitational at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center in Gainesville, Fla.
The Lady Vols face off against ranked SEC opponents LSU (#1), Auburn (#7) and Florida (#17) as well as Arizona State, Baylor, Clemson, Florida International, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Jacksonville, Miami and South Florida in the non-scored meet. The women's action begins at 9:30 a.m. with the women's 5000m run and concludes at 6:45 p.m. with the 4x400m relay.
UT's most recent meet resulted in a team victory at the SEC Quad in Lexington, Ky., on Jan. 21 and 22. The Big Orange tallied 142 points to outscore Alabama (112), Kentucky (108) and Mississippi State (97) at UK's Nutter Field House. The Lady Vols had last weekend off.
Tennessee has charted NCAA provisional qualifying marks by four individuals in three events thus far in 2000. On the waiting list for nationals are Beth Gehring (12-1 , pole vault), Lesly Love (12-1 , pole vault), Andrea Pappas (50-1 , shot put) and Heather Sumpter (7.43, 60m dash).
The last time the Lady Vols traveled to Gainesville, they finished fifth in the 1999 Southeastern Conference Indoor Championships. The 72.5 points they tallied was a point out of fourth place and 3 out of third, marking the highest indoor league score for UT since 1994 and the best placing since 1995.
Ferguson's squad will be back in action next weekend, making its second trek of the season to Blacksburg, Va. The Orange and White will compete in the Virginia Tech Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 11-12.
