Lady Vol Swimming and Diving Team Earns National Ranking
October 26, 2000 | Women's Swimming & Diving
The University of Tennessee women's swimming and diving team opens the 2000-01 season with a No. 23 national ranking from the College Swimming Coaches Association in its preseason poll. The poll comes on the eve of the teams season-opening meet on Friday at the Southeastern Conference Dual Meet Extravaganza.
In 1999-2000, the Lady Vols finished 28th at the NCAA Championships and return a pair of NCAA qualifiers in senior diver Lizzy Flynt and junior swimmer Monica Shannahan. The team also features four swimmers who competed at the United States Olympic Trials, including Shannahan, senior Pam Hanson, junior Valerie Conte and freshman Jennifer Hettich.
For the Lady Vols 2000-01 season debut, Tennessee will host the four other SEC East teams in a five-way dual meet. UT will face squads from No. 4 Georgia, No. 8 Florida, Kentucky (receiving votes) and South Carolina. In the remainder of its dual meet slate, the Lady Vols will face No. 6 Auburn, No. 14 Northwestern and No. 19 Arizona State, in addition to facing other ranked teams at several invitational meets.
In the CSCA poll, Arizona earned the No. 1 overall position, while the Wildcats Pac-10 brethren California and Stanford tied for second. Two other SEC schools not competing this weekend, Alabama and LSU, also earned votes.
Action at the SEC East Dual Meet Extravaganza begins at 10:30 a.m. with the diving competition, followed by the swimming events at 2:00 p.m. at the UT Student Aquatic Center.
