Dickie Named Southeastern Conference Athlete of the Week
October 17, 2000 | Women's Cross Country
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (Oct. 17, 2000) -- Sophomore Sharon Dickie has been named the Southeastern Conference Cross Country Athlete of the Week for the period ending on October 14. This is the first time in her career that Dickie has been honored with the Athlete of the Week award.
The SEC nod comes after another in a season of strong performances from Dickie as she has led the Lady Vols in each of the team's four outings this season. In her most recent effort, she finished second among collegiate runners at the Furman Invitational with a time of 17:44 in the 5K race. She was the first SEC runner from the six conference teams competing to cross the line and made her place in the UT record book as she recorded the 12th-fastest time by a Lady Vol at the Furman course in 23 outings.
Dickie has finished in the top five in all three of the team's prior meets, including a victory at the UT Invitational. All of her success comes on the heels of a redshirt season in 1999-2000 when Dickie was forced to sit out for the year due to an inflammatory hip condition. During her freshman year, she earned All-SEC and All-Region honors and competed with the team at the NCAA Championships.
Dickie and the rest of the Lady Vol cross country team will return to action on Oct. 30 at the Southeastern Conference Championships in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
