Vols Claim Four Events, Remain Second At Georgia Invitiational

The 11th-ranked Tennessee swimming and diving squad won four events on Saturday night as they remained in second place at the Georgia Invitational in Athens, Ga. The Vols have totaled 630.5 points over the first two days of competition and enter the final day trailing host Georgia, who has 773. Michael Gilliam, Joel Shapiro and Chris Stewart each claimed individual event titles and the 200-meter medley relay squad won as well.
The Volunteers opened the evening with a decisive victory in the 200-meter medley relay as Gilliam, Jeremy McDonnell, Matt Parrish, and Brent Owen reached the wall in a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:38.93. UT also placed a relay squad in fourth-place in the event as Lance Asti, Stewart, Zane DeWitz, and Raphael Thuin turned in a time of 1:42.11. The Vols' third relay entry claimed eighth with a time of 1:41.55. Shapiro took title in the 100-meter butterfly with a time 55.44 and was followed closely by teammate DeWitz who was third in a time of 55.07. Parrish was sixth with a time of 55.69. Vols Justin Hoggatt and Raphael Thuin scored as well finishing 13th and 15th, respectively.
Stewart and McDonnell made it a 1-2 Tennessee finish in the 100-meter breaststroke with Stewart turning in a time of 1:02.38 and McDonnell reaching the wall in a time of 1:02.49. Each mark bettered the NCAA provisional qualifying standard. Gilliam and Ross Powells made it back-to-back 1-2 finishes for the Vols in the 100-meter backstroke. Gilliam, the defending NCAA 100-yard backstroke champion, clocked a time of 53.66 and Powells reached the wall in a time of 54.79, both NCAA provisional qualifying times.
In one-meter diving, Gabi Chereches finished fourth and freshman Jake Dorsey was eighth for the Vols. Other top performances for the Vols included freshman Ben Brink's fifth-place finish in the 400-meter individual medley (4:30.69). Steve Cromer finished seventh in the same event (4:32.06). In the 200-meter freestyle, freshman Greg Simpson claimed fourth-place with a time of 1:51.71 and Brett Tannhauser was fifth with a time of 1:53.54. Tennessee's 800 freestyle relay squad finished third as Nick Lakin, Tannhauser, Brink and Cromer clocked a time of 7:40.05.
