WTEN CENTRAL: #35 Lady Vols at SECs

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The 12th-seeded Tennessee women's tennis team advanced to the second round the 2018 SEC Tournament, taking on No. 5 seed Ole Miss at Barksdale Stadium on Thursday at 6 p.m.

The 35th-ranked Lady Vols (18-10) are the hosts of this year's tournament, which runs from Wednesday, April 18, through Sunday, April 22. Admission to the event is free to all spectators.

The Big Orange defeated the Crimson Tide, 4-1, in the first round, led by strong singles play from Gabby Schuck, Johanna Silva and Kaitlin Staines. The contest marked the Lady Vols' fifth-consecutive victory against Alabama. UT fell to Ole Miss earlier in the season, 4-0, in Oxford.

In last year's tournament, Tennessee also played the Crimson Tide in the first round, winning that matchup, 4-0. UT would end up falling in the second round, though, in a 4-1 contest to Mississippi State.

Since this is an SEC Event, there is a strict clear-bag policy for all matches, and all spectators will have to abide by this rule. We will have medical bag check gates for people who need to bring their medical necessities in a regular bag (NOTE: Diaper bags are not medical bags).

ABOUT THE OLE MISS SERIES: Against Ole Miss, the Lady Vols dropped the match between the two earlier this season, 4-0, in Oxford. The Lady Vols lead the series with a 26-20 edge.
ABOUT THE ALABAMA SERIES: Tennessee will look to extend its four-match winning streak against Alabama in the first round of the tournament. UT leads the series 34-18 all time, including a 4-2 victory in Knoxville earlier this season.

HISTORIC START: The Lady Vols' 12 consecutive wins to open this season marked the program's best start in program history. The 12 victories also stands as the longest winning streak since 2001, when junior Alison Ojeda and the Lady Volunteers strung together 11 straight wins.

HAMMOND NAMED TO SEC COMMUNITY SERVICE TEAM: Sadie Hammond has a total of 158 volunteer hours during the 2017-18 academic year. She was part of a 13-day study abroad journey to Vietnam last summer for UT's VOLeaders Academy, where she worked with children in orphanages, volunteered at various sport skill camps and visited with university students for 70 hours of volunteering opportunities. She as accumulated the most volunteer hours by any Lady Vol for each of the last two seasons and was also named to the 2017 SEC Community Service Team.

STAINES RECEIVES SEC HONORS: After helping the Lady Vols to a perfect 3-0 record and a pair of conference victories, Kaitlin Staines was named the SEC Freshman of the Week on April 4. Staines, a native of Wagga Wagga, Australia, was 2-0 in singles and 1-0 in doubles to help the Lady Vols (16-7, 2-7 SEC) defeat 15th-ranked Auburn and sweep a doubleheader against Alabama and Western Kentucky over the weekend.
In singles, she came from behind to defeat Auburn's Andie Dikosavljevic, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, and followed that performance up with a 6-4, 7-5 win against Alabama's Ann Selim. Her and Ariadna Riley defeated Auburn's 67th-ranked team of Alizee Michaud and Taylor Russo, 7-6 (6), to clinch the crucial doubles point for Tennessee.

ROAD TRIP: For over a month (Feb. 9-March 9), Tennessee played nine matches in a row across the country before returning home against South Carolina on March 16. During the away stretch, the Vols played matches in Georgia, Florida, Indiana, Louisiana, North Carolina, Ohio and Texas. The team was 6-3 during the stretch.
