Ivory Crockett to Be Honored at Tennessee Relays
April 10, 2018 | Track & Field
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Ivory Crockett, who set the 100-yard world record in 1974, will be recognized during the Tennessee Relays this weekend at the site of his record run at Tom Black Track at LaPorte Stadium.
Crockett set the record time of 9.0 seconds on May 11, 1974, during the Tom Black Classic. The 100 yards is no longer a competed event since the sport standardized to a 400-meter track in the United States, and he has remained the record holder.
Tennessee director of track and field Beth Alford-Sullivan and Tennessee stars Justin Gatlin and Christian Coleman will honor Crockett before the men's 100-meter dash Friday at 3:30 p.m.
Crockett, 69, was born in Hall, Tennessee, but later moved to the St. Louis area where he ran for Webster Groves High School. He competed collegiately for Southern Illinois, winning National AAU Championship titles in the 100 yards in 1969 and 1970. He was running for the Philadelphia Pioneers club when he clocked his famed 9.0 race.
After his competition career, Crockett returned to the St. Louis. He has spent much of his career working in business administration and recruiting for area hospitals.
