Scalise Leads Field, Vols in Third After Day One at Southwestern Invitational
February 26, 2018 | Men's Golf
WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. – Senior Lorenzo Scalise leads the 78-player field, and the Tennessee men's golf team has sole possession of third place after one-and-a-half rounds at the Southwestern Invitational.
Â
The 15 participating teams were scheduled to play two rounds on day one of the tournament, but a two-hour frost delay in the morning postponed the start of play. The delay resulted in the team only getting in one-and-half rounds each after round two competition was suspended early due to darkness.
Â
The tournament is being played at North Ranch Country Club on the 6,992-yard, par-72 Lakes & Oaks Course.
Â
The Vols stand alone in third place, carding a 14-over on day one. Just two strokes behind Tennessee in fourth place is Washington State at 16-over, while San Diego State is in fifth at 17-over. No. 22 UCLA, at 3-over after day one, leads the field. Host-school Pepperdine is 7-over and in second-place.
Â
Through 27 holes, Scalise stands at 5-under with eight birdies on the day. Scalise was helped by a strong first round in which he shot a 5-under 67, then stayed even on the back nine of round two.
Â
Also in the top 10 for Tennessee is sophomore Brayden Garrison, currently tied for eighth-place at 1-over. Garrison made it through 26 holes on day one, carding five birdies of his own.
Â
Tennessee's third-best scoring golfer on day one, redshirt freshman Sean Wilcox, carded a 9-over through 27 holes to position himself in a tie for 49th-place.
Â
Freshman Chase Roswall stood at 11-over through a team-high 28 holes to check in with a tie for 61st place.
                    Â
Tennessee's third competing freshman, Spencer Cross, came in at 77th overall through 27 holes on day one.
Â
Play will resume Tuesday morning at 11 a.m. Eastern. The golfers will begin play from where they were when round two was suspended on Monday evening.
