CLEARWATER, Fla. – Meghan Gregg did what Meghan Gregg does, which is deliver when her team needs production, and the Lady Vols needed a hit to close out the 5-4 win against Marshall Sunday in their final game of the Michele Smith Pediatric Cancer Invitational at the Eddie C. Moore Complex.
Gregg came to the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning following a double by CJ McClain and a pair of singles by Aubrey Leach and Jenna Holcomb to load the bases. A single to right field scored McClain and Leach, allowing the 10th-ranked Lady Vols (10-1) to pull out another late-game victory inning.
Tennessee jumped ahead of the Thundering Herd early by scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. A single by Gregg scored Leach from second, and then Abby Lockman came up later in the inning and doubled to right center, scoring Gregg and Chelsea Seggern, who reached earlier on a walk.
However, that lead was short-lived, as a defensive miscue by the Lady Vols in the top of the second resulted in a rare inside-the-park home run.
Marshall (4-5) scored four unearned runs and took a 4-3 lead into the home-half of the seventh.
Gregg finished the game 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run, while Leach scored two runs and finished 2-for-3 in the game.
Gregg—a National Player of the Year Candidate—has 14 RBIs through the first 11 games of the season.
Caylan Arnold (3-0) picked up the win in the pitcher's circle, as she finished the game with seven strikeouts. She recorded an impressive 29 total strikeouts for the weekend, bringing her season total to 41 in 32.2 innings pitched.
Up Next: Tennessee will play in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Palm Springs, California, next weekend, where they will face BYU, Bethune-Cookman, UC Davis, Oregon State, No. 3/3 Oregon and Northwestern, respectfully.
