Lady Vols Tied for 14th After Windy First Round of Northrop Grumman

PALOS VERDES, Calif. -- Battling windy conditions on the Palos Verdes course (par 71, 6,017 yards) and a strong field featuring 12 top-25 teams, the No. 28 Lady Vols finished the first round of the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge tied for 14th place with a score of 303 (+19). All 18 teams shot above par while only seven players turned in rounds below 71.
"We started on the back nine and the wind was clam at that time," head coach Judi Pavon said. "When we turned, the wind really picked up for a tough stretch of holes so we made some mistakes during those holes. We played much better as a whole than our scores showed so hopefully we will be better tomorrow."
Tennessee was just three-over-par through the back nine. Leading that effort, senior Anna Newell shot even through her first nine holes. The Tampa, Florida, native then carded two-over-par after making the turn to finish the day tied for 19th place.
Finishing the round with a score of 75 (+4), freshman Waverly Whiston carded birdies on Holes 15 and 17 before adding another on Hole 6 to tie for 39th place. Just two strokes behind her, sophomore Micheala Williams recorded a six-over 77 (T61) while senior Blakesly Warren shot seven-over to tie for 64th place (78).
Freshman Mariah Smith rounded out the Volunteers' lineup. She finished the round tied for 81st place (80, +9).
In the team standings, No. 39 Arizona and No. 6 Arizona State enter Day Two tied for first place with scores of 285 (+1). No. 3 Alabama and No. 1 UCLA sit seven strokes off the lead in a tie for third at 292 (+8). Arizona State's Olivia Mehaffey leads the field at three-under while three players are tied for second at two-under.
"We had several doubles that counted towards the team score which we needed to avoid on this course," Pavon said. "The greens are also very firm and fast which we haven't seen at home this winter, so we should improve daily there."
Tennessee returns to action on the Palos Verdes Golf Course for the second round of the Northrop Grumman starting at 1:17 p.m. ET on Monday, Feb. 12.
